In the center of Forte dei Marmi stands the Fortress that is the symbol of the city. The fortress was built in 1788 by the Grand Duke of Tuscany Leopold I of Lorraine and he started a reclamation of the surrounding area that was very marshy, and in order to promote the urban settlement.Today, this building is immersed in a modern urban setting consisting of tree-lined streets that gives the city a worldly and restful appearance. In Piazza Garibaldi, alongside the Fortress, there is a beautiful well dating back to the eighteenth century.By the sea there is the loader jetty, once used to board huge marble blocks to be delivered to all over the world and today it's only a tourist attraction. Here, you can take a walk and admire the coast from three hundred meters away. The entire town planning and the district called "Roma Imperiale" are very interesting. There are scattered estates designed by the best architects such as Michelucci, Giò Ponti and Pagano, as well as some buildings such as Villa Agnelli, now Hotel Augustus, with its underpass that leads directly to the sea and the oldest night club in Italy, the "Capannina di Franceschi", inaugurated in 1929.
